Nature Reserves
Beaverlac Nature Reserve
This is a gorgeous, small nature reserve situated in the southern most part of the Cederberg on a working farm, Grootfontein, and nestled below the Olifants River mountains. There are endless waterfalls, rock pools and river water to keep you cool and lovely hikes – mostly quite easy.
Cederberg Wilderness Area
This is one of those Holy Grail places that is absolutely majestic. The towering sandstone rocks that make up the landscape of the Cederberg are awe-inspiring and beautiful, especially in early morning or late afternoon light.
Gamkaskloof Nature Reserve (Die Hel)
Die Hel is a unique village that time has forgotten, in a beautiful green valley of lush vegetation and surrounded by the Swartberg mountains. Part of the Swartberg Nature Reserve, it’s run by Cape Nature and is very remote with no way of getting out the other side.
Karoo National Park
SANParks can be counted on every time to provide wonderful nature reserves to visit. They are always extremely clean, well staffed and provide comfortable accommodation – the Karoo National Park is no exception. 12km from Beaufort West and situated in the dry, open spaces of the Karoo, surrounded by majestic dolerite cliffs, it is best visited outside the hottest months of December to March.
