Wine Tasting in Bot Rivier

A different destination

Let’s go wine tasting in Bot Rivier turned out to be not so straight forward. Who’d have guessed we’d bring home a puppy amongst the wine boxes?

We’d arrived at Luddite Wine farm (www.luddite.co.za), without an appointment (advisable to make one, we just got lucky) and happily, for us, there was a problem with some equipment so Niels Verburg, the wine maker and owner, was only too pleased to let us taste wines.

The eclectic winemaker

Dressed in an apron and wellies with grape juice stained hands he was delightful company and his enthusiasm for his product was completely justified. His wines are superb; they are also expensive, but whoever said  “life is too short to drink bad wine” has my vote.

A unique wine tasting!

We were chatting and tasting, then tasting some more and generally having a wonderful time, when in walked a very thin, very tired Great Dane dog. Niels told us that she’d given birth to 14 puppies a few weeks ago and he had to find homes urgently for them as the poor mother couldn’t sustain feeding them any longer.

By now feeling very mellow we of course said ‘yes’ to one of the pups. We drove away with several cases of superb wine and a small black bundle snuggled in between them.

Check out the Bot Rivier wine route (www.botrivier.co.za) it’s alternative and fairly undiscovered, offering some great wines. Just beware of the dog!

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the relative head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking about intelligently. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
